In the wide catalog of successful Netflix series, it is important to highlight the German Sci-fi series Dark, created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. The TV show started in 2017 and finished in 2020 after three seasons, becoming one of the most successful series on the platform. Dark was well received by critics and its ending is known as one of the best science fiction series endings.
Baran bo Obar and Jantje Friese announced on November 13th, 2018, that they were developing “1899”. In 2020, bo Odar said in an interview that the Brexit situation and the European migrant crisis were significant for the development of the series.
The new Sci-fi Netflix original series is expected to premiere on November 17th, all episodes of season 1 will be available on this day, therefore, we will get to discover the mystery 1899 is hiding. Its trailer was released on June 6th and for the content it shows, the series looks promising.
The series reflects a group of European migrants who are willing to leave London on a steamship and start a new life in New York City. However, in the journey they come across another migrant ship adrift on the ocean, the journey starts to become a nightmare.
The cast is very diverse since the actors have different nationalities. Miguel Bernardeau will be part of 1899’s cast, this is very striking for the Spanish public. It is known that Bernardeau has participated in other Netflix series like Elite where he plays Guzmán, this role gave the actor a lot of popularity in the last few years.
Other names that sound familiar to us, are Emily Beecham (who was part of the film Cruella), Aneurin Barnard (who played Gibson in the movie Dunkirk) and Andreas Pietschmann who was part of Dark playing Jonas as an adult. Other actors who are part of this project are Maciej Musiał, Anton Lesser, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Martin Greis-Rosenthal, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards and Alexandre Willaume.
In 2021, the crew started the filming of 1899, exactly on May 3rd, three months later than expected. In relation to the locations during the filming, some scenes were shot in Germany, specifically Berlin, where they stayed until October of 2021, therefore the location of most of the scenes is in Germany. It has been known that the crew spent two weeks in London, United Kingdom, hence the series has different settings in order to make the story more attractive to the public.
Since the series has a diverse cast and has been shot in different places with different cultures, 1899 is expected to have different languages in the episodes, predominating English, German, Polish, Danish, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Cantonese. It is confirmed that each actor will speak their native language in the series
The sneak a peek the trailer gave us, can make us deduce that the series will be similar to Dark, in relation to time travel, many details that will later make a difference in the story of the series, also the TV show seems to be as analytical as Dark, which created confusion and theories among the spectators because of its complicated, but brilliant plot.
Netflix users (but mostly Dark fans) are waiting for 1899 to be released in November, since the series seems to be as good as Dark is. Besides, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese created Dark with no expectation to become a fantastic and popular project, and now, thanks to what Dark created through the platform, 1899 is expected to be as well.
