From the creators of the famous series Dark, we will soon have on Netflix a new production that will continue with the sinister and twisted style of a suspense thriller, this time, on the high seas.
The series by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese will focus on the story of some European immigrants who want to start a new life in New York, for which they must make a boat crossing that will end up becoming a nightmare from the moment they encounter another ship adrift. This is the synopsis of 1899.
The cast is quite varied, as well as striking, and for those who have seen the Spanish series Élite, they will be surprised to see Miguel Bernardeau (who played Guzmán) as part of the cast of 1899. Other notable names in the cast are Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann (who already participated in Dark) Maciej Musiał, Rosalie Craig, Anton Lesser, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rosager, Yann Gael, Maria Erwolter, Martin Greis-Rosenthal, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards or Alexandre Willaume.
The creators have already announced that the series will have a total of 8 episodes and that, as was the case with Dark, the story will revolve around a mystery that the protagonists must solve. Some of the details that are currently known about the series are the great previous research by the production team to reflect in aesthetics and acting the reality of what could be the European society of 1899, and is that each of the crew members of the ship (which will be called Kerberos) have their own origin and culture.
Added to this is the fact that they are completely different people who have very deep secrets, probably secrets that lead them to want to start a new life in another country. In other words, they are all running away from something, and the mystery in which they will be involved, as well as the relationships they will develop between them, will gradually bring their own stories to light. Another relevant detail is that each actor tries to speak the mother tongue of his character to give more realism to the story, and as we mentioned before, the creators have made a great effort to create a faithful image of the European cultures of the late nineteenth century, giving a slightly more twisted approach to the migration crises suffered by the continent.
The official release date of 1899 has not yet been announced, but it has been confirmed that it will be at the end of 2022. Undoubtedly, being a story that follows the same style as Dark, we will surely have to slowly analyze each episode and create our own theories about the mystery.
