Angelica Ross is feeding more and more into the category of the song of the summer with her new song.
Early Friday morning, the Pose star released the music video for her new single “Only You,” a soulful bop reminiscent of 2000s R&B in both its sound and video aesthetic. Executive produced by Ross and directed by Will Sikora, the video features Ross meeting a frankly delectable beau (played by beauty model Casey Dandridge) in a crowded club; she is then transported to a desert fantasy in which she walks on the dunes wearing only a gold metal bikini top, jewelry and a nearly invisible thong

The sun-bronzed sensuality and sweat in the video are captivating, and Ross is in her element as she holds the viewer’s gaze and refuses to let go. It’s in those longing gazes, in fact, where the true message of the song can be discerned; “Only you/Can lift me up and take me all the way,” Ross sings in the chorus, raising her hand not to the person she likes in the club, but to herself, kneeling before her in the sand.
That’s because this isn’t just supposed to be a romantic love song, it’s a self love song as well. “‘Only You’ is really about understanding that Only You must be the love you’re looking for before you can truly love someone else,” Ross explained in a press release accompanying the video’s debut. The whole package comes together to make a sexy and powerful statement, channeling classic Destiny’s Child vibes and a tone all Ross’ own to strike directly at the souls of queer listeners.
“Only You” is the result of Ross’ partnership with A2 Productions and music producer Anthony Preston, who selected Ross in 2021 to perform the hook on DJ Ultra Laté and Mila Jam’s club anthem “Intense.” (Preston also co-wrote “Only You” with Andre Lindal, Henrik Ofeldt and Raelene Selma Arreguin.)
It sure sounds like that experience lit a musical fire under Ross, as she told Metro Weekly last year, “it opened up a whole new alley for me.”
