On December 16, Avatar: The Way of Water came out, which is perhaps one of the most anticipated movies or even the most anticipated this year, if we remember well, Avatar, which came out in 2009, broke a record at the box office and became the highest grossing movie of the story, a fact that made the second avatar movie have high expectations both cinematographic and commercial. Currently, Avatar: The Way of Water has earned approximately 700 million dollars. The goal of the film directed by James Cameron is to reach 2 billion dollars.
Avatar (2009) is the highest-grossing film in history, with a total of 2.9 billion dollars, followed by Avengers: Endgame and Titanic with 2.7 and 2.1 billion dollars respectively. This created a high expectation for Avatar: The Way of Water, which must reach at least two billion dollars, and many expect it to surpass the first film.
In the debut weekend, avatar managed to earn approximately 434.5 million dollars, most of the revenue is international and only 134 million dollars came from North America. According to Box Office Mojo, Avatar 2 has now earned $661.58 million at the worldwide box office. In North America, the film has made 197.68 million dollars, and internationally $463.90 million.
The movie with a budget of around 350 and 460 million dollars did not need much time to restore its budget, Avatar: The Way of Water is one of the most expensive movies ever made, behind Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Compared to movies that have come out on these same dates, like The Menu, they have not been able to bring in the same amount of money as Avatar has done in its first week.
Avatar 2 continues the events that occurred in the first film. Jake Sully and Ney’tiri started a family and are doing everything they can to stay together. However, the couple must go to explore new regions of Pandora, but an ancient threat is reborn and Jake must fight a very difficult war against humans.
Avatar: The Way of Water premiered on December 16 and is on the billboards of all theaters worldwide.
