The highest grossing movie in history, Avatar is back in theaters with its second film Avatar: The Way of Water, it will premiere on December 16th. The Sci-fi/Adventure film directed by James Cameron continues the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoë Saldaña) who formed a family and are trying to stay together; though they must go on a journey to explore different regions of Pandora, the protagonists will be exposed to different threats, Jake will have to fight against humanity. In addition to being able to be watched in 4K UHD, Avatar: The Way of Water will have a post-credit scene that will last approximately 10 minutes. The $250 million budget film is expected to be as great as the first one of the sequel.
The first film from the Avatar sequel, premiered back in 2009. It caused sensations worldwide becoming the most grossing film of all time. Cameron revolutionized the industry with the editing and the 3D effects shown in the movie. This is the main reason why the project is well known for its 3D and IMAX experience. However, not only the audiovisual caught the attention of the public, but also the plot, where Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who is paraplegic is sent to Pandora on a corporate mission. Jake must decide to follow the mission’s orders or protect Pandora. Even though it is a Sci-fi film, it displays controversial issues that are lived day by day in the world. Back in the day, Avatar had a successful promotion, yet the experts predicted the film might not meet box office expectations. When it was released, the movie surprised the industry by grossing approximately $26 million at its premiere, exactly on December 18th, in three thousand theaters. Today, the film has earned $2.878 billion.
Since the first trailer of Avatar 2 or Avatar: The Way of Water released on May 9th, even though the gap between films is 13 years, fans are excited about the project, besides, the expectations by the experts and the public are higher in comparison with the first film. The excitement about James Cameron’s project has caused Avatar to be re-released worldwide and only on the first day it had already raised 30 million dollars. Its re-released aims to remind the fans of the story of the sequel’s first movie. Aside from that, it aims to raise money once again.
The first Avatar movie won numerous awards, a total of 73 wins in 148 nominations, including three Academy Awards (out of nine nominations) for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects at the 82nd Academy Awards. Also, at the Golden Globes, the movie won in the categories of Best Director and Best Film – Drama. Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to have the same or more success and that it surpasses the first Avatar film at the box office.
The sequel does not end here, it has been confirmed a third film due to release in 2024. By then it is expected that the special effects (SFX) to be far superior than the previous two thanks to the advancement of technology. The film industry will end the year 2022 with one of the most anticipated films by fans and specialists.
Avatar became so popular that it gained its own area at the Disney Animal Kingdom Theme Park located in Florida. The area is called Pandora The World of Avatar, named after the film’s planet. It is an immersive experience that contains The Mother Tree and The Tree of Souls which are the main scenarios of the film, you can not miss this experience.
