Over the weekend, the “Say So” star took to Threads to air her views on the naming convention adopted by her fanbase. In her uncompromising post, she declared, “my fans don’t name themselves s–t.”
Further elaborating on the matter, she expressed her dissatisfaction with fans identifying themselves as ‘Kitten’ or ‘Kittenz’, suggesting they should instead focus on more productive pursuits like employment and household responsibilities. Her caustic remarks quickly made rounds on various social media platforms.
Not one to shy away from controversy, Doja Cat stood firm on her position against the use of the fandom name, despite the backlash that ensued. When a fan page inquired about an alternative name in light of her dislike for ‘kitten’, the 27-year-old advised them to reconsider their entire online existence.
The Grammy-winning artist was equally forthright when another fan sought assurance of her affection for her followers. “I wanna hear you say (I do love you guys) As usual you say to your fans,” the fan wrote, prompting the Grammy winner to bluntly reply, “i don’t though cuz i don’t even know y’all.”
Tensions escalated further when another user suggested Doja Cat’s success was contingent on her fans, implying she would be working in a retail job and producing music on amateur platforms without them. The artist retorted, “nobody forced you,” dismissing the fan’s claims as the rantings of a delusional individual.
It’s worth noting that the moniker ‘Kittenz’ has been associated with Doja Cat’s fandom for a considerable time. Its origin can be traced back to a Twitter poll in 2020 where the “Planet Her” rapper asked her followers for suggestions on a suitable fandom name. The tweet, which has since been removed, indicated her hesitation in assigning a pet name for her fans and her eagerness to settle on one due to the frequency of this query. The poll revealed that ‘Kittens’ was the preferred choice for 74 percent of the participants.
In the wake of the controversy, Doja Cat has deactivated her Threads account. However, there are fans who speculate that her criticism of ‘Kittenz’ could merely be a calculated move. As one user posted on July 24, “She’s beginning to tease her next single and she KNOWS what’s she’s doing. All the attention is on her right now.”
