Euphoria premiered on streaming platform HBO Max in June 2019 becoming one of the most watched youth dramas on television. Its dark plot focused on Rue Bennett (Zendaya) struggling with her destructive addiction was a hit that quickly got a second season approved.
This was scheduled to premiere in 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. To avoid such a long wait, a two-episode special aired in December 2020 and January 2021, which has also served as a link between the two batches.
After three years, Euphoria returned in early January with its second season that premiered, non-stop, every Sunday. Unfortunately, this second installment has already come to an end. Despite all this time, this second season worked much better, achieving audience figures that have made it the most watched in the history of HBO Max only behind the still almighty Game of Thrones.
This raw season of the series has touched on many themes, focusing a bit on all the characters in the plot. The highly anticipated All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name leaves us in anticipation of what we will see in Euphoria 3. Lexi’s controversial and wonderful play has been one of the main points of this season and in this last episode she has taken it upon herself to be a point and a break in the season.
The future of Euphoria is unclear, as the Season 2 finale doesn’t offer a clear picture of what might happen. However, despite these flaws, the confidence with which the series operates indicates that season 3 could surpass its predecessor in both good and bad ways.
While it’s unclear where some characters are headed Rue seems to be on a path of redemption, but there’s also a hint that she could relapse. Zendaya revealed in an interview with The Cut that the ending of this second season was changed as they wanted to give Rue a better ending. “We have to put some hope into this series. I think Rue deserves it and I think anyone who suffers the same as she does deserves it,” she recounted.
The next season has no set premiere date and it’s difficult to estimate when it might premiere. Zendaya’s busy schedule is also a factor: she will be filming Dune 2 later this year, which means production on Euphoria’s third season cannot begin until early 2023. This puts the premiere date for Euphoria season 3 in late 2023 at the earliest.
