Matthew M. Williams has been changing the perception of Givenchy through out all his work in the brand. He has been in the position of creative director for the brand since 2020, and it had change everything in it. His experience founding 1017 ALYX 9SM give him a voice and a public in the streetwear world and that’s one of the reasons he was selected. A very dark aesthetic and technical mixed with metallics is how you can describe his work in a way.
For the main runways he always go out and try to innovate with different techniques and manipulations on clothes and getting risky with the styling. But for the in-between seasons collections, he strip down his own aesthetic in the brand to a streamlined and distinctly contemporary pieces with a bit of industrial vibe to them. Getting accesible pieces that a big chunk of population might wear.
For the Resort 2023, the American designer had decided as in previous collections that there is no concept behind the garments, there are just well done and totally functional keeping a certain aesthetic that attach them to the work of Matthew.
The way he is styling the different garments this time is through not over-styled them. He is designing from what he sees on the streets and what he thinks is cool, so the style needs to reflect that.
The approachability that is shown by means of menswear, put the brand in a space where there is possibility to find a lot of famous celebrities wear it. The creative director is obsessed with music and he is trying to dress every big artist that is making it with the young public. There is a demand for menswear that is going to be delivered in a fashion show in a few weeks. Also he postponed his first couture collection that it was going to be celebrated and shown in a few weeks as well. The perfect mixed of formal and streetwear is created by this master mind mixed with technical details and amazing styling.
