The representation of plus-size women in the entertainment world is very scarce and, to this day, it is still hard to find them in the media. However, in the music world, although the representation is not huge either singers like Lizzo make this struggle visible. Throughout her career the American singer has become a representative of the curvy and plus size movement and has wanted to give this issue the importance it deserves.
And she continues to make history and fight for their rights. This time, Lizzo will launch a new reality show called Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. This series will premiere on Friday, March 25 on Amazon Prime Video and will feature eight episodes in which Lizzo will be one of the main characters in each and every one of them.
“Girls who look like me don’t have representation. It’s time to find them myself”
,says Lizzo.
On the dance competition show the singer is on the hunt for confident, ‘bad-ass’ women to join the elite Big Grrrls and join her world tour. The Big Grrrls are known to be the backup dancers for Lizzo’s performances and tours.
As the official synopsis of the reality show tells it, “The 10 hopeful women who move into the Big Grrrls house will have to prove they have what it takes to go all the way and join Lizzo in front of a global audience on center stage.”
But being part of Lizzo’s dance troupe won’t be easy. These women will have to pass several tests, while living together in the same house and facing criticism from the judges. The trailer, packed with footage from the show, shows the girls as they go into competition mode and dance for the opportunity of a lifetime.
In addition, each of the contestants reveals her own internal struggle for acceptance. “It’s hard to love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you”, is what we can hear in part of the trailer that the singer herself announced on her social media.
The show also features choreographer Tanisha Scott and some of the singer’s original Big Grrrls, such as Chawnta’ Marie Van, Shirlene Quigley and Grace Holden. Other special guests will include body movement expert Charm La’Donna, Rashida KhanBey Miller and SZA.
A program where Lizzo once again makes her own a theme that has been visible since the beginning of her career: opportunities should be the same for everyone, regardless of size.
