The singer has come back to the music with his new song called “Selfish”, the first peak of his upcoming album.
Justin Timberlake has released his first solo song since he released the album “Man of the Woods” in 2018. The song is called “Selfish” and is described by the record company as “a raw and honest portrait of Justin as an artist and person”.
The song was written by Justin Timberlake, Theron Thomas, Amy Allen, Louis Bell and Cirkut, and produced by Justin Timberlake, Louis Bell & Cirkut.
The song offers romantic pop with catchy melodies combined with Justin‘s very personal touch. Timberlake performed “Selfish“ live at a concert last week in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, but the official launch took place this Thursday.
The slow rhythm of the song matches perfectly with the voice of the former NSYNC member, who shows off his falsetto while flowing with his harmonies. A Rhythm and Blues sound remembers to the old Justin sound.
On the music video, Justin gets himself into an Alice in Wonderland theme. The video, directed by Bradley J. Calder, shows a surreal story that begins with the final applause for Justin Timberlake after a performance. After that, the singer walks into a small room when everything is way smaller, and he fights to escape. The nod to Alicia in this overwhelming space with surrealism and play with sizes ends with Justin himself breaking down the tiny room from the outside.
As for the lyrics, we should highlight the romanticism in the words and the use of metaphors, perhaps a little recurring, but reminiscent of a true love. Besides lyrics like “I want every bit of you, I guess I’m selfish” where he shows his most jealous part, he admires the woman he loves and compares her with an angel.
According to the platform Genius, this track will be followed by the premiere of new songs like “Sanctified” and “No Angels“, which will also be part of “Everything I Thought It Was“. Besides that, we know now that “Selfish” will be the song number 15 on the album official track list.
The singer wanted to announce the album with a trailer narrated by actor Benicio Del Toro. The short clip only last 30 seconds, and we can see Justin on the model of a gas station in the desert, where you can also perceive a painted sunset in the distance.
“What do we have here?” says Benicio’s voice as he recounts what we see and discovers Timberlake: “There’s Justin! Why doesn’t he turn around? What is he looking at?” Without finding an answer, the final title arrives: “Justin Timberlake presents, everything I thought it was.”
The album will finally arrive on March 15 with the aforementioned 18 songs as content. However, Justin has spoken about how difficult this selection has been: “I worked for a long time on this album and ended up with 100 songs,” Timberlake said in an interview for Apple Music. “So narrowing it down to 18 was an issue, and well, yeah, I’m very excited about this album. “I think probably every artist says this, but it’s my best work.”
The artist will appear as a guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday. Although he has hosted the show five times and acted on it up to six times, he has not visited SNL since December 2013. Apart from that he has visited programs like “The Tonight Show”
It looks like Justin is back on the road, and we are going to be able to enjoy him for a long time from now. The first piece is out and looks promising, we can’t wait to have the full project out soon.
