The Texas rapper is back on the music after a brief hiatus. The past Saturday, November 4, the singer released the “Cobra” audio and music video.
During this year, Megan Thee Stallion has collaborated in some songs with other artists. This song, “Cobra”, is the first solo music she has released this year so far. This is also her first independent song released with her Hot Girl Production.
We should remember that she decided to quit her discography management and create a personal one: Hot Girl Production. She has spent 4 years in a legal battle with 1501 Certified Entertainment, so she decided to go independent. Now, she shared that her next album is totally self-financed by her.
The song, “Cobra” is only the first taste of a future album. Megan posted already the name of it, called “Act one”. She posted 3 pictures where you can read the name of the album and some snakes on her Instagram. She referred to this moment as a new stage: “Right now, I’m really working on my dynasty”.
Going back to the song, on “Cobra” the “Booty” singer shed her skin and open her soul to her fans. On the lyrics, she talks about her difficult times during the fame. The words are more personal, intimate and delicate that what the rapper got us used to. She also talked about mental health and how bad she felt in the past. The music platform Genius described the song: ““Cobra” sees Megan share her raw and intense portrayal of emotional pain, depression, and the complexities of personal relationships as well as her confidence and resilience.”
Megan also wanted to explain her personal definition of the song on some Instagram posts, where she wrote: “Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats. Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within.”
On the song she raps her verses over a simple base produced by Bankroll Got It, Shawn “Source” Jarrett and Derrick Milano. There is also a guitar solo produced by Megan and the guitarist Diggy Lessard.
Some of the lyrics are: “Every night I cried, I almost died / And nobody close tried to stop it” and “At night, I’m sittin’ in a dark room thinkin’ / Probably why I always end up drinkin’ / Yes, I’m very depressed”
On the music video, we see how Megan comes out of a snake. The animals appear all around the music video. On other scene, the “WAP” singer shed her skin while people takes photos of her like she’s a piece of art on a museum. The lyrics and the video have a critic tone, but she doesn’t lose her personal essence. She keeps rocking sexy looks with short clothes and provocative choreographies.
This video has beaten records and has become the YouTube music video most watched in the first 24 hours by a solo female hip-hop artist. The video, directed by Douglas Bernardt racked up over 2.15 million views in one day. She surpassed artists like Doja Cat or Ice Spice. The song also reached to 1.04 million streams on Spotify in the first 24 hours.
Megan Thee Stallion has started strong on her independent era and hopes to reach a great success with her soon to come out album. The 3 Grammy winner might be soon taking more awards.
