Beetlejuice 2 is one of the most anticipated sequels in Hollywood history. The original 1988 film, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Alec Baldwin, was a cult classic that blended horror, comedy, and fantasy in a unique and unforgettable way.
The film followed the exploits of Beetlejuice, a mischievous and malevolent ghost who offered his services to a recently deceased couple who wanted to scare away the new owners of their house. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup and spawning a cartoon series, video games, and a Broadway musical.
Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for decades, and rumors have been swirling for years that Burton and Keaton were interested in reprising their roles. Beetlejuice 2 was confirmed in early 2022, and now we have a release date. The film is expected to be released on September 6, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Michael Keaton said that he and director Tim Burton are trying to recreate the same magic that made the original film a hit, using practical effects and improvisation. “Beetlejuice is the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long,” Keaton said. “We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time.”
Keaton will reprise his role as the mischievous ghost who helps a recently deceased couple haunt their former home and its new eccentric occupants. He will be joined by some of the original cast members, such as Winona Ryder as Lydia, the goth teenager who befriends Beetlejuice, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia, Lydia’s stepmother and a self-proclaimed artist. The sequel will also introduce new characters, such as Beetlejuice’s wife, played by Monica Bellucci, and Lydia’s daughter, played by Jenna Ortega.
