Hayley Atwell emphatically denied these rumors, equating Tom Cruise’s relationship with her as that of an ‘uncle.’ The British actress shared that she often sought advice from Tom during the shoot and found the circulating rumors “weird,” causing her distress.
Hayley Atwell recently silenced the persistent speculation about her dating relationship with her “Mission: Impossible” co-star, Tom Cruise. In an interview with the “Independent,” she articulated that her relationship with Cruise and director Chris McQuarrie was more familial, likening them to “two uncles” rather than potential romantic partners.
Atwell addressed the “weird [romantic] rumors,” labeling them as “dirty” and “grubby.” She expressed her frustration saying, “Why are things being assumed or projected onto me about my relationship with my work colleague and boss?”
Recently engaged to composer Ned Wolfgang Kelly, Atwell denounced the rumors as “upsetting” and “invasive,” stating that they were adversely affecting those in her personal life. “It becomes invasive,” she added.
The “Agent Carter” lead found support in Tom Cruise, an actor well-versed in dealing with such speculation. He counseled her to disregard the gossip. Recalling their conversation, Atwell quoted Cruise: “‘You know exactly who you are. You know what you’re about. And that is the only thing that matters. Romantic speculation first arose in late 2020 when an insider reported to The Sun that they “hit it off from day one” on the set of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.” While they maintained a discreet profile amid the rumors, their shared appearance at the Wimbledon finals in July of the following year further fueled the speculation. The promotion of “Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two” over the last few months kept the gossip alive.
Two months prior, Atwell announced her engagement during an April holiday in Venice. Cruise, on the other hand, has been linked recently to singer Shakira. The actor was seen with her at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami in May, and sources informed Page Six that Cruise was “deeply interested in pursuing her.”
