The film is based in the 80s, in Virginia, a teenager Maren Yearly who sneaks out of her home to attend a sleepover with some friend. While at the friend’s house, Yearly has a cannibalistic impulse when she bites a girl’s finger, and then she runs back home.
After her eighteenth birthday, her single father Frank leaves her to look after herself, by giving her cash, her birth certificate and a tape recording. On the tape, Frank tells Maren about her first cannibalistic episode, when she killed and partially ate her babysitter. Later, Maren leaves her hometown to go and search for her mother, Janelle, who abandoned her when she was an infant.
Maren takes a bus to Ohio, where she meets Sully, an elderly man who is also a cannibal, and realizes she was like him by the scent. Maren later moves to Indiana where she meets Lee at a grocery store. Both start traveling together and as the trip advances, they start falling in love, Maren will later find out the truth about her mother, and her relationship with Lee will be affected by shocking events.
