The singer release her second studio album “Think later”
The Canadian released her second studio album, Think Later, on December 8. The album counts with 14 songs and lasts 38 minutes and 22 seconds, which makes it an easy and fast listen for the fans. This new work explores the feelings of falling in love and embracing the raw emotions you experience as a result of leading with your intuition and heart.
The album has been produced under hitmaker Ryan Tedder, which has worked with artists like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé. Tate McRae’s album has also some features and collaborations with top producers including Amy Allen (Harry Styles, Justin Bieber), Jasper Harris (Doja Cat, Post Malone), Greg Kurstin (Adele, Pink), ILYA (Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith), Savan Kotecha (Ariana Grande, The Weeknd), among others.
On an interview Tate talked about the álbum: “After turning 20, when I began to reflect on the relationships and situations in my life, I realized that a common thread was that I had been living and making decisions much more spontaneously and much less in my head for the last year. This album represents the feelings of falling in love, feeling flashes of obsession, missing the signs and feeling the repercussions. I really wanted to lean towards a more pop sound and approach my writing from a much more playful and curious place. I was able to make this album with some people I admire a lot, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
The first song on the album is “CUT MY HAIR”. This initial track creates the atmosphere for the album sounds. According to Genius, “The cutting of her hair symbolizes her shedding that sad old self and becoming a more confident person”. Although she talks about getting back with her ex on the song, it is a freedom expression where she grab the reins of her own Destiny.
The second song in the album is her pop hit “GREEDY”. This song was teased on the social media for a time, until the final release on September 15 this year. This song got to become the number one song in the Billboard 200 charts and on the Spotify Global ranking. The music video accumulates more than 53 million views.
On the song, genius described as “The song details McRae telling men not to get too consumed by their interest in her, or in other words, their eponymous ‘greed’, while also playfully boasting how she would want herself too.”
The next song is “RUN FOR THE HILLS”. This song with a slow dancy rhythm tells the story of falling in love and meeting again and again, but you know that the relationship is not going anywhere.
Tate admitted to Apple Music that she rewrote the song a few times so it could be more relatable to her personal experience at the moment. She also added: “Usually I’m a really stubborn person and I feel like I can get myself out of any situation, but for some reason I was stuck in this ongoing cycle of being so attached. I’m now on the other side of it and I can be like, ‘Oh, thank god I’m on my own,’ but I think at the moment it was a mix of the worst and most magical feelings ever.”
The fourth song on the list is “HURT MY FEELINGS”. On the song, Tate is the other girl that is meeting with a boy while he has a girlfriend. She knows that fact and accept that reality but keeps on because she’s too deep to get out.
Tate explained that like “What I’m saying is I want you to hurt my feelings. I want you to be in my life. I want you so bad, and I just can’t have you.”
Next is “GRAVE”. The ballad talks about a relationship that is not possible and she realizes that all she fought for is worthless. She realizes that trying to change yourself for a lover just don’d make sense. If they don’t love you as you are, they aren’t gonna love you even if you change for them.
The next song is “STAY DONE”. This piece is about knowing that the relationship is getting toxic and the better thing to do is break up, but you’re still in love with that person. That difficult time when the little good things are heavier than the lots of bad ones.
Tate said to Apple Music: “It talks about how I can still be in love with you even when you’re yelling at me. I can still find the most beautiful parts of the situation even when it’s the worst possible situation.”
On “EXES” we get back to the dancy songs and the funny lyrics. The song came out as a single on November 17. The lyrics on it make fun of the people that fall in love with her because she’s always running and doesn’t stop with one person. “The track displays Tate’s unpredictable and flippant nature in her relationships, but is ultimately unapologetic since she is proud of who she is.”
On “WE’RE NOT ALIKE”, according to Genius, “McRae talks about a girl she believed was her best friend, but she was betraying Tate behind her back the entire time”. The track clocks exactly at 3:00 minutes long.
The next one is “CALGARY”. The song is titled after her home city. Getting back awakes all her slept past demons and made her live again moments that caused pain in her youth. “Over a soft repeated guitar melody, McRae gets vulnerable and starts to believe she won’t change, and will feel out of place forever”.
She continues with “MESSIER”. On it, McRae sings about a relationship that she can’t leave or end, because they are the only one who understands McRae enough to know how to hurt her the worst. Tate says, “I wrote this song in the shower in 20 minutes. I ended up finding a weird YouTube beat and wrote all the melodies on guitar.”
The next song is the one that gives the album its name, “THINK LATER”. This one is one of the darkest sounds. The aggressive beat contrast with her light voice. This song embodies the spirit of the album, the phrase of live now and think later, let yourself be led by your heart and not reason.
On “GUILTY CONSCIENCE” Tate shows her more experimental side. She explained, “It talks about my dedication to this person and wanting to be by their side regardless of what anyone said around me, regardless of what anyone thought about what I was doing.”
We’re arriving at the end of the album with “WANT THAT TOO”. It’s a heartfelt, slower tempo track that explores Tate’s experience of betrayal and being taken advantage of in the music industry. It’s one of the most personal songs on the album by the lyrical content.
The final song in the album is “PLASTIC PALM TREES”, a guitar ballad that narrates her view about L.A. and the music industry, when everyone thinks is a perfect world to become famous and rich, but these are “plastic palm trees”. A deep song to end up the album that has succeeded all around the glove. Getting great numbers o charts and attracting listeners and fans on every song.
Besides the album, Tate McRae has worked on visuals for her YouTube channel and her social media, creating one specific clip for every song.
The album is a short rollercoaster with dance songs that make you move and deep ballads with personal lyrics. Even if the album has come out late this year, it will be the top ones to remember. Moreover, TateMcRae is starting a tour nexte year with it.
