The singer has revealed how it feels to receive so many criticisms by social networks
Every year for the special edition of Hollywood the magazine Vanity Fair brings together several influential people. This 2023 for the 29th edition has decided to bring together young actors and actresses who are at the top of their careers. In addition to Florence Pugh, Ana de Armas and Austin Butler, among them we find Selena Gómez who, on the occasion of appearing on the cover, has given an interview for this medium.
Apart from talking, as is clear, about her career as an actress and the new season she is shooting of Only Murders in the Building Selena has also dedicated a few words to her mental health and how social networks affect it.
One of the questions the magazine has asked the artists is that if they have ever decided to leave their social networks in the hands of their assistants. “I never got a chance to go to a real high school. The world was my high school for the longest time, and I began to feel flooded with information I didn’t want. I went through a bad moment after a breakup and I didn’t want to see any feedback, not necessarily about the relationship, but about the opinions of me against someone else” the actress replied. She then mentioned that although there were millions of good comments she could only look at those that were bad, even if they were less.
Because of this, she uses less social media every day, in fact she only has TikTok on her phone. “There are wonderful things about social media, connecting with fans, seeing how happy and excited they are and their stories. But it’s usually filtered for me now. I’ve created a system. I send everything I do to my assistant, who publishes it. As for the comments, my team will gather some things that are encouraging” she continued explaining.
During the singer’s intermittent relationship with Justin Bieber between 2011 and 2017 she was constantly criticized for her body. In those years Justin was associated with a large number of models such as Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Sophia Richie, Barbara Palvin and his current wife, Hailey Baldwin. This led some of his followers to start comparing Selena to them constantly. ‘”Those people went into detail. They wrote paragraphs that were very specific and cruel. They would be constantly crying. They were constantly anxious… I couldn’t do it anymore. It was a waste of time,” Gómez said.
Selena’s relationship with Bieber ended several years ago, however, the comparisons have not stopped yet. Just a few months ago through social networks a video went viral showing photos of how thin the actress was during the time she was the girlfriend of the performer of Peaches. The former Disney girl, upon seeing it, commented that it was because Justin preferred models, thus implying that she remained thin for him.
Yet this has not been the last time she has been criticized for her weight. This year at the Golden Globes gala the singer herself had to respond to thousands of negative comments about her weight gain saying that she had eaten a lot on vacation. Unfortunately this is not the only thing that makes her gain kilos, the multiple medicines she have to take for her diseases contribute also.
