One of the best Netflix original series will be back very soon with its new season. Of course it is The Crown with season 5. The TV show based on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, will release this brand new season on November 9th, 2022. The first teaser of season 5, displays Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who are now played by Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki, heading towards their divorce. The cast of this season will be different from the previous one since between season 4 and this one some years have passed. However, as in the previous season, it will focus on Charles and Diana.
The Crown is a historical drama series created by Peter Morgan and produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Television Pictures. Its plot displays the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from the beginning, each season represents a period of time of the monarchy and periodically the cast changes as years pass between seasons. The series also displays some other characters based on real politicians who were important in the United Kingdom’s history, such as Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Macmillan and Harold Wilson. Not only that, but also shows historical moments and how the monarchy acted out, like the Suez crisis and the Falklands invasion.
In the first and second season, the main protagonists were Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth II), Matt Smith (Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh) and Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret). For season three and four Olivia Colman played the role of the Queen, Tobias Menzies as Prince Phillip, Helena Bonham Carter played Princess Margaret, and on season three two characters were added, Prince Charles played by Josh O’Connor and Lady Diana Spencer portrayed by Emma Corrin. For seasons five and six (Morgan confirmed a sixth season), Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville will succeed Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter.
The Crown has earned positive reviews since the beginning of the show since it has been praised for its acting, directing, writing, cinematography and production, and not only that, but also has won many awards, becoming a very successful TV show. The Crown has been nominated 423 times and has won 129 awards including a total of twenty-one wins at the Primetime Emmy Awards, where seven were from the Drama Series category. Season 5 will focus more on Diana and Charles’ relationship, since the end of their marriage is coming, besides it will also focus on Diana’s final part of her life until her death in 1997. This will be the first season to premiere without the British monarchs as both Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
The Queen passed away last September, a tragic news that shocked the world, her death brought repercussions to the series as views increased by at least 60%. The weekend after her death, the viewership in the United Kingdom spiked at six hundred percent. Since her death, the audience is craving for more seasons of The Crown, yet the sixth season will focus on William and Kate Middleton’s romance, it is not sure yet if Peter Morgan will portrait the recents events, including Prince Phillip’s death. The Crown will come back soon and the public can not wait for this outstanding TV show.
