Yung Lean’s side project is back with a new album that takes his musical career one step further
Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad is the name that hides beneath two of the most well-known acts in the actual experimental rap scene. He began to release music under the name of Yung Lean at the age of 17. This took place in 2013. His richly deserved recognition became stronger over time and ended up giving him the opportunity to play live shows outside Sweden, the country he grew up in.
Jonatan leandoer96 appeared three years after his debut. This space allowed Jonatan to try artistic choices that did not quite match with his previous work: drum machines and aggressive beats were replaced by melodic and delicate ballads. His new album is the perfect example of this idea.
“Sugar World” presents a collection of eight tracks produced by Jonatan and Frederik Valentin, a Danish composer and multimedia artist that has collaborated with electronic music legends such as Loke Rahbek. These two visions get along in the most perfect way unimaginable. “Blue Light”, the record’s main single, shows this brilliance: “Go up, go up, go up, go up, not down, not down, not down, not down” sings a mournfully desperate Jonatan as the beautiful sounds with orchestral arrangements fade away. He is back, and he is here to stay.
