According to Yonhap News, YG Entertainment secured BLACKPINK ‘s continued group activities through a significant contract renewal
YG, one of the major Korean entertainment agencies, signed an exclusive group activity contract with BLACKPINK, their biggest intellectual property (IP), in December 2023. Details emerged on March 22nd, revealing a substantial financial commitment to the four members.
YG‘s 2023 financial report, filed with the Financial Supervisory Service, indicates roughly 41.2 billion won (approximately $30.9 million USD) in intangible assets from exclusive contract fees. Listed entertainment companies typically categorize artist contracts as intangible assets, depreciating them equally over the contract period.
Considering the 41.2 billion won figure and the potential for other IP-related contracts, industry estimates suggest each member received a multi-billion won down payment to continue group activities.
Interestingly, while BLACKPINK renewed their contract solely for group endeavors, all members have chosen individual agency representation for their solo activities, which currently comprise the majority of their projects. Jennie, Lisa, and Jisoo have established their own private agencies, while Rosé has also left YG for independent pursuits. Given the substantial investment in the renewal, YG is planning a robust future schedule for BLACKPINK.
Lisa, Rose, Jennie and Jisoo will pursue their individual projects independently
In a move solidifying their group future, BLACKPINK has re-signed with YG Entertainment for continued group activities. However, a statement released by YG on December 29, 2023, clarifies that individual contracts will not be renewed.
The four members already have their business venues not only in music but also in the world of fashion. Lisa has contracts with Celine and Bvlgari, Jennie with Chanel, Jisoo with DIOR and Rosé with Yves Saint Laurent. However, their music careers look way less active in the recent years.
“BLACKPINK recently renewed their contracts with YG for their group activities, and we have agreed not to proceed with additional contracts for [the members’] individual activities,” the statement reads. YG remains committed to supporting BLACKPINK‘s group endeavors while offering enthusiastic backing to the members’ solo pursuits.
This news confirms previous speculation that Jisoo (Kim Ji-soo), Lisa (Lalisa Manobal), Jennie (Kim Jennie), and Rosé (Roseanne Park) would prioritize individual representation for solo activities, while continuing their group collaboration under YG’s umbrella.
The December 6th announcement of an exclusive group contract quelled rumors of a collective move to another agency. “We are happy to continue our relationship with BLACKPINK,” stated YG Founder Yang Hyun-suk at the time. This deal triggered a significant rise in YG‘s stock price. However, the news of separate individual contracts led to a 6.6% drop on January 2nd.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Jisoo has signed a solo contract under the management of Blissoo, an entertainment startup led by her brother. Jennie established her own record label, Odd Atelier, in November 2023. Both Jisoo and Jennie have expressed enthusiasm for their solo ventures.
Their solo careers and projects have already been proven successful
This focus on individual pursuits comes after a period of thriving solo careers within the group. Lisa and Rosé launched solo albums in 2021, followed by Jisoo‘s solo debut in March 2023. Jennie, who released a solo album in 2018, also presented a new single last year.
BLACKPINK, formed by YG Entertainment in August 2016, has achieved international acclaim. Their accolades include the 2023 MTV Video Music Award for Group of the Year, and they hold the distinction of being the first K-Pop act to headline Coachella. The group boasts a loyal fanbase, evident in their nearly 20 million monthly Spotify listeners, over 92 million YouTube subscribers, and nearly 58 million Instagram followers.
BLACKPINK has also embraced the digital landscape. Last year, they hosted a virtual concert on PUBG Mobile, attracting a staggering 15.7 million viewers. Additionally, they collaborated with metaverse studio Karta to offer an immersive experience for fans on Roblox.
The future looks bright for BLACKPINK but BLINKS will need to be patient
BLACKPINK‘s contract renewal with YG Entertainment marks a fascinating evolution for the K-Pop group. While securing their collective future, the agreement carves a unique path for both the group and its individual members.
Financially, the hefty contract signifies YG‘s commitment to maximizing BLACKPINK‘s potential. The substantial investment suggests a robust schedule of group activities, likely capitalizing on their immense global popularity.
However, the decision not to renew individual contracts empowers each member to pursue solo careers with independent representation. This aligns with their flourishing solo endeavors – from album releases to virtual experiences – showcasing their artistic versatility and audience connection.
This dual approach – a strong group foundation coupled with independent ventures – positions BLACKPINK for continued success. Fans can anticipate exciting group projects while also supporting the members’ individual artistic expressions. Ultimately, this innovative structure allows BLACKPINK to solidify their reign in the K-Pop industry while fostering the distinct talents of each member.
