3 Spanish teams, 2 German teams, 2 British teams and 1 French team are all the candidates for this year’s Champions League
The Final match will be played at Wembley Stadium on the 1st of June and all the teams are ready to take their chance. The stage is set for another chapter in the UEFA Champions League history as the quarter-final draw took place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The matchups promise a captivating blend of historic rivalries and exciting new encounters fans will surely enjoy (or suffer) to see.
Current European Champions Manchester City faces what looks like the most competitive rival of the draw. Playing against 14-time champions Real Madrid. Third consecutive season these European giants clash in the knockout stages. Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City dominated last year’s semi-final clash, securing a resounding 5-1 aggregate victory. This year’s encounter offers City a chance to solidify their dominance, while Real Madrid seeks redemption for their previous defeats.
Another intriguing pairing pits PSG against Barcelona. This match rekindles memories of Barcelona‘s legendary “La Remontada” comeback seven years ago, where they overturned a staggering 4-0 first-leg deficit against PSG. Both teams will be eager to rewrite history and secure a place in the semi-finals. Luis Enrique, ex-Barcelona player and coach and currently in PSG might put his knowledge of the team to good use.
Elsewhere, Arsenal faces a challenge against Bayern Munich. Although their performance in the Bundesliga has not been the best they are still a real competitor in Champions League. The Bavarians have won their last three matches against the Gunners by a convincing 5-1 margin. Can Arsenal defy the odds and upset the German powerhouse? Rounding out the quarter-finals is an encounter between Atlético de Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. This matchup adds a personal touch, with former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel set to face his former club.
Everything is set for the Semi-Final and Final too
The quarter-final draw employed a straightforward process. Eight balls containing the names of the qualified teams were drawn one by one. The first and second balls determined the opening fixture. This sequence repeated until all four pairings were established. As expected, no team received seeding or preferential treatment based on nationality.
The semi-final draw will follow a similar procedure. As it is usual Four balls, labeled “Winners of Quarter-Final 1” through “Winners of Quarter-Final 4,” were shuffled and drawn to determine the pairings. According to the results the first drawn team will be designated as the home side for the first leg.
The final, scheduled for June 1st, 2024, will be held at Wembley Stadium in London. While the draw serves administrative purposes, the winner of Semi-Final number 1 (Atlético de Madrid/Dortmund vs. Paris Saint-Germain/Barcelona) will be designated as the “home” team for the final. Finally, the stage is set and the storylines aplenty. Football fans around the world eagerly await the captivating matches that lie ahead.
