If there is a saga that we want to return to our screens, it is the Indiana Jones saga, and indeed it will do so next year with Indiana Jones 5. It is a project that is scheduled for June 30, 2023. James Mangold directs the film, that’s right, for the first time the saga will not be handled by Steven Spielberg, but will serve as producer along with George Lucas who is the creator of Star Wars. This is what we know about the next Indiana Jones movie.
What is the fifth installment about?
The upcoming film which is not titled yet, but will be the sequel to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered in 2008. “Indiana Jones 5” will be the final installment of the Indiana Jones film series.
Indiana or “Indy” Jones is an American archaeologist and adventurer. In 1969, Indiana lives against the backdrop of the Space Race and started to have doubts about the U.S Government due to their recruitment of World War II enemies in desperation to beat the Soviet Union out in the competition.
Meanwhile, Voller is a NASA member involved with the moon-landing program who wishes to get the film’s MacGuffin so he can correct some mistakes from the past and rectify the world into a better place. Jones’ goddaughter, Helena, accompanies the archeologist on his journey.
Who will feature in the film?
Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Indiana Jones, Phoebe Waller-Brigde as Helena, the goddaughter of Indiana Jones, John Rhys-Davies as a friend of Indiana Jones, returning to the series for the first time in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Mads Mikkelsen as Jürgen Voller, an ex-Nazi and now a NASA member who is involved with the moon-landing program, Boyd Holbrook as Klaber, a crazed lapdog of Voller’s, Toby Jones as Basil and Shaunette Renée Wilson as Mason, a government agent.
Also, Thomas Kretschmann, Antonio Banderas, and Oliver Richters are cast in undisclosed roles.
How was the development of the film?
Harrison Ford said he would return as Indiana Jones for a fifth film if it does not take another twenty years to develop, Ford was referring to the gap between Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade which premiered in 1989, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which arrived to theaters in 2008.
The last film mentioned introduced the character Mutt Williams played by Shia LaBeouf. Producer George Lucas wanted to make Williams the lead character in this fifth film, but the decision was against this idea.
Later in 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm which gave Disney the ownership rights to the Indiana Jones Intellectual property. In 2016, Disney announced that the fifth film would be released on July 19, 2019, along with Ford. Spielberg would direct the film with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall as producers. It was later confirmed that the story will continue from where it was left off in the previous film.
It is always difficult to get lost in a series or movie when they are coming to an end, and this will be the case with Indiana Jones, both the movie and the character have become an icon within the film industry and outside of it as well, since that the project has been adapted to video games with the same story.
