Feeling good about yourself is a very difficult task and one that, in general, everyone has a hard time with. Sam Smith knows a lot about this and throughout them musical career they have left us several songs that have touched our hearts. This is the case of them new song Love me more, which becomes the first single of them new musical stage.
This song aims to reach all those people who do not feel identified with who they are or who are going through a hard stage of life. With phrases like “Every day I’m trying not to hate myself” or “Maybe I am learning how to love me more” we see how the singer wants to give a positive message in which them go from hating themself to loving themself more and more.
We could define the song as a midtempo ballad reminiscent of Stay with Me in several elements, such as the piano or the gospel chorus. Although this time you can see very well the hip-hop rhythm in the background, so it is a very powerful mix.
In the video clip we can find images of Sam Smith as a child and also as a teenager, and in which the music is the absolute protagonist. The past and the present intermingle to show us as they did in the video of them first song, Stay with me. This music video was filmed by Luke Monaghan, who worked on Too Good at Goodbyes and Writings on the Wall.
“Over the last few months, I’ve been busy, to put it mildly. I’ve buried myself in a lot of music. I’ve had wonderful emotional journeys, which is very normal for this part of the process. These songs are especially emotional for me and letting them go will be harder than ever but it’s something I’m excited to do. I’ve gone through a very creative shift over the last few years,” Smith wrote a few weeks ago on Instagram about the process of creating his new studio album.
Recall that Sam Smith declared themself as non-binary in September 2019, so this song is very emotional and reminiscent of the journey this artist went through to discover themself.
“Today is a good day, so here goes. I decided that I will change my pronouns to THEY / THEM. After a lifetime at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”
