The awards celebrated their 66th edition on February 5, rewarding artists such as Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus.
Last week the music industry celebrated the 66th edition of the Grammys. This awards ceremony has been dominated mainly by women, highlighting the relevance of the female role in the industry in recent years.
The first edition of these awards was in 1959 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the city of Los Angeles and New York. They were originally called “Gramophone Awards” and are a distinction awarded by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States. Later the “Latin awards” were segmented from the official awards.
On this occasion the ceremony took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 4 with a previous red carpet and a gala presented by Trevor Noah.
The most important category of the year, “Album of the year”, was contested between women like Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, SZA and Taylor Swift, with the latter taking home the statuette, thus becoming her fourth award in this category. and surpassing famous singers like Frank Sinatra or Stevie Wonder.
The singer of “Midnights”, the winning album, decided to take the stage to thank her fans and surprise with the announcement of a new album for next April that will be called “The Tortured Poets Department”. It was Celine Dion who was in charge of giving him the gramophone, thus reappearing in public life.
The ceremony also highlighted some of the live moments, such as the tribute that Annie Lennox dedicated to the late Sinead O’Connor, the duet of Tracy Chapman, who appeared in public after several years, with country singer Luke Combs.
Among the awarded celebrities are SZA, who was in the lead in nominations, with nine and took home awards for best R&B album. Victoria Monét became the breakthrough artist and boygenius won the award in the rock category. On the other hand, the Colombian Karol G has become the first female singer to triumph in the urban genre section.
Miley Cyrus has been one of the most popular of the night. The actress who became known for Hanna Montana has been the winner in 2 categories: best solo pop performance and best recording of the year where she thanked her mother, sister and team in her speech, making it clear that she was not forgetting anyone else. .
For her part, the song Flowers was performed by her on stage where she decided to change part of the lyrics to celebrate her first victory in these awards and re-launch the message of female empowerment that inspired her after her most notorious love breakup.
In addition, Miley made up to 5 wardrobe changes throughout the night, all of them maintaining her aesthetic and the characteristic hairstyle that she decided to wear.
For her part, Billie Eilish remains triumphant with her song “What was I made for?” for the movie Barbie, winning the Grammy for best original soundtrack and repeating the history of the Oscars a few months ago. The singer took the stage afterwards to sing the song in front of the audience.
Although she was not seen on the red carpet, Beyoncé was one of the guests at the ceremony, she was seen with her family, Jay-Z and her daughter, Blue Ivy, enjoying the live performances. The “Renaissance” singer is currently the person with the most nominations for these awards and the one with the most victories with a total of 32 statuettes. On this occasion the winner was her husband, Jay-Z, who went up with his daughter to collect the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.
During the gala, the tributes took on special importance. For their part, Stevie Wonder and Annie Lenox used their live shows to pay tribute to the musical figures who died in 2023. On the other hand, Fantasia Barrino, the singer and protagonist of The Color Purple, paid a rhythm-filled tribute to Tina Turner, performing her iconic hit, Proud Mary.
